As political and economic changes have taken root in Myanmar/Burma, conditions for ordinary Burmese remain largely unchanged. Nowhere is this clearer than in the rural heartland, where poverty and vulnerability persist in high numbers. A 2011 UNDP study of poverty in Myanmar, Poverty Profile, reports that a quarter of the population live in poverty. In the Irrawaddy Delta region where Project Malot is located, the numbers increase to a third of the population. One of the leading challenges is education; only 15% of households in the country have completed secondary school, and today less than half of children, 47%, go onto secondary school.  Project Malot is a modest effort to change conditions for Myanmar’s youth through improving access to education. It began in 2008, after Cyclone Nargis as part of an outreach effort to offer humanitarian support for a community facing devastating loss. Over the last four years, through the kind support of donors, we have helped build a middle school, provide and upkeep a library, offer scholarships and tuition support for students to attend high school and, importantly, forged friendships for a rural community in the Malot track of the Irrawaddy Delta. The effort serves ten villages, whose children attend middle school and annually 20-25 students have support to go onto high school.

This year’s fundraiser focuses on two initiatives. The first is to improve the facilities of the middle school by strengthening the roof to enhance the learning environment and reduce the temperature during the summer months. The second is to support the tuition fees for children to attend high school.  All funds raised go directly to the school project.

Please join us in our outreach efforts to support their dreams and opportunities. Come enjoy the music and cheer!
